Nearly ten years had passed since the Dursleys had woken up to find their nephew on the front step, but Privet Drive had hardly changed at all. The sun rose on the same tidy front gardens and lit up the brass number four on the Dursleys' front door; it crept into their living-room, which was almost exactly the same as it had been on the night when Mr Dursley had seen that fateful news report about the owls.
Only the photographs on the mantelpiece really showed how much time had passed. Ten years ago, there had been lots of pictures of what looked like a large pink beach ball wearing different-coloured bobble hats – but Dudley Dursley was no longer a baby, and now the photographs showed a large, blond boy riding his first bicycle, on a roundabout at the fair, playing a computer game with his father, being hugged and kissed by his mother. The room held no sign at all that another boy lived in the house, too.
Nearly ten years had passed since the Dursleys had woken up to find their nephew on the front step.从德思礼夫妇一觉醒来wake up发现自己的侄子nephew躺在门口的台阶上on the front step，将近10年过去了。
Nearly ... years had passed since sb. Had done sth. Nearly 10 years had passed since I had picked up“Harry Potter and the philosopher's stone”for the first time in my university dorm.
Privet Drive had hardly changed at all，hardly表示否定“几乎没有”，比didn't change要更真实，毕竟10年了，More or less这条街总要变点，比如砖墙旧了一点之类。
The sun rose on the same tidy front gardens and lit up the brass number four on the Dursleys' front door；太阳依旧升到屋前整洁的花园上空，太阳升起用rise（过去式rose，过去分词risen)，海明威的《太阳照常升起》The sun also Rises.
Which was almost exactly the same as it had been on the night when Mr Dursley had seen that fateful news report about the owls.确切得说，是十年前德思礼先生caught the last report of the evening new的夜晚。
I've made a fateful decision to quit.
Ten years ago, there had been lots of pictures of what looked like a large pink beach ball wearing different-coloured bobble hats.
But Dudley Dursley was no longer a baby, and now the photographs showed a large, blond boy riding his first bicycle, on a roundabout at the fair, playing a computer game with his father, being hugged and kissed by his mother.
但是where is he? The room held no sign at all that another boy lived in the house, too.
不过，作者罗琳可没直接说he led a miserable life，他过得好苦啊！
Yet Harry Potter was still there, asleep at the moment, but not for long. His Aunt Petunia was awake and it was her shrill voice which made the first noise of the day.
‘Up! Get up! Now!'
Harry woke with a start. His aunt rapped on the door again.
‘Up!' she screeched. Harry heard her walking towards the kitchen and then the sound of the frying pan being put on the cooker. He rolled on to his back and tried to remember the dream he had been having. It had been a good one. There had been a flying motorbike in it. He had a funny feeling he'd had the same dream before.
His aunt was back outside the door.
‘Well, get a move on, I want you to look after the bacon. And don't you dare let it burn, I want everything perfect on Duddy's birthday.'
It was her shrill voice which made the first noise of the day.“shrill”adj.
Up! Get up! Now!“起来! 所以小哈利woke with a start. With a start吓一跳；wake过去式woke，所以wake with a start就是“惊醒”，“垂死梦中惊坐起”！
Rap=a series of quick sharp hits or knocks一阵急敲，就像说rap的rappers总是感觉说话很着急，“呦呦呦，你快起床，起来给我们做口粮！” 哈利听到了the sound of the frying pan being put on the cooker煎锅放到炉子上的声音。
Hey, Harry, this is not just a dream. That's how you came here. You're an angle flying to the earth.
过来给我look after the bacon照顾熏肉？
Don't you dare let it burn你敢把它煎糊了试试！Don't you dare do sth! I want everything perfect on Duddy's birthday！
Harry got slowly out of bed and started looking for socks. He found a pair under his bed and, after pulling a spider off one of them, put them on. Harry was used to spiders, because the cupboard under the stairs was full of them, and that was where he slept.
哈利慢慢吞吞地从床上爬起来get slowly out of bed，开始找袜子look for socks。他从床底下找到一双袜子a pair，从其中一只袜子上抓下一只蜘蛛pull a spider off one of the socks，然后把袜子穿上put on。 普通孩子看到spider可能会吓得move with a start，但是哈利be used to spiders，早就习惯了。
Cupboard was where he slept. You can imagine how dark, narrow and dirty it is!
When he was dressed he went down the hall into the kitchen. The table was almost hidden beneath all Dudley's birthday presents. It looked as though Dudley had got the new computer he wanted, not to mention the second television and the racing bike.
Exactly why Dudley wanted a racing bike was a mystery to Harry, as Dudley was very fat and hated exercise – unless of course it involved punching somebody. Dudley's favourite punch-bag was Harry, but he couldn't often catch him.
他穿好衣服，顺着走廊来到厨房go down the hall into the kitchen. The table was almost hidden beneath all Dudley's birthday presents. The table was almost hidden beneath sth.而且礼物还都价值不菲，比如the new computer, the second television and the racing bike新电脑，第二台电视机，还有跑车。
Why！It's so unfair! Exactly why Dudley wanted a racing bike was a mystery to Harry为啥肥胖如猪的Dudley会想要racing bike，他又不可能骑的喽！
Why sth. Happened was a mystery to sb. Why there are students so willing to study with passion was a mystery to me!
It's no longer a mystery to you, trust me!
Dudley's favourite punch-bag was Harry. 比如对着某人的脸就是一拳，就叫punch sb. in the face!
He punched me and knocked my teeth out. 幸好，我们的Harry灵巧very quick，所以肥猪Dudley couldn't often catch him. Catch sb.
